La Jota is a dance, song and manifestation of Castilian folklore, typical of the old Castiles, (Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha), varying according to the regions and being transmitted for hundreds of years, giving rise to different areas of the Spanish geography. to the Jota Aragonesa, Jota Asturiana, Jota Gallega, Jota Montañesa or Cántabra, Jota Murciana, Jota Extemeña or for example the Jota de la Alta Andalucía.
It is usually accompanied by dulzainas and drums, guitars, lutes and tambourines, while the dancers keep their hands raised above their heads or in a cross, and almost always accompanied by castanets. These types of jotas are danced with the characteristic skipped, chopped steps and with great sobriety, hence the meaning of Jota: Salta, from the Mozarabic "Sawta".
The music is frequently accompanied by songs called couplets, dealing with love, weddings (giving advice and praise to the couple), life or their religiosity, and characterized by their picaresque and great sense of humor.
La Jota de Toro: it is a typical jota representative of the city of Toro, danced at parties, celebrations, Castilian weddings and very special days.
