Our wines from the AMERICO range pay tribute to the merchant, explorer and cartographer Amérigo Vespucci, who working for the Italian Medici family came to Toro in 1505 for the signing of the laws of Toro, granting him King Ferdinand "The Catholic" a letter of citizenship. Castilian, that is why at Bodegas Diez Gómez we like to share that the American continent has the name of a countryman from Toro, Zamora, Castilla y León, Spain.
Americus wrote the Mundus Novus and the Letter to Soderini, which attribute to him a leading role in the Discovery of America and its identification as a new continent. For this reason the cartographer Martin Waldseemuller in his map Universalis Cosmographia of 1507 coined the name "America" in his honor as a designation for the New World.
AMERICO wines are differentiated by being aged in Spanish oak barrels "Quercus pyrenaica", also known as rebollo and taxonomically it is Quercus pyrenaica. "It is a softer wood" and with more closed pores. It combines the high tannicity of French oaks with the great aromaticity of American oaks.
